I have a client (running anti-virus and anti-malware software) who was hit by malware that encoded all Office and pdf files. They held them for ransom, offering to provide a decoding key if she paid a fee. It looks like they are now unrecoverable. My advice...set up regular backups, preferably off site/in the cloud, where these miscreants can't get to it. If you back up to external hard drive, make sure you unplug after backing up, and you have multiple backups. Don't just copy over the same files. If you need information for a backup product to use, let me know.

Twelve years ago, my first child was getting ready to start kindergarten. I wanted to be available for all the "mom" things, so after eight years of invaluable mentoring at the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission (thank you Doug Ross) I began to put out feelers for part time IT positions. A very wise man asked if I wanted part time, or if I wanted to be self-employed so I could make my own hours (thank you Frank Viverito). And thus Computer Strategies LLC was born. I contacted a friend of my brother's who was a very involved Chamber of Commerce member, and he put out the word. I can trace many clients back to his referrals (thank you Mark Schreiber). But there is room for more, so if you or anyone you know is in need of a small business technology partner, please let me know!
